You Send Me

Hello there and welcome to the January 22nd edition of Hangin’ in the Hammer; where we’re really glad to have a day to relax and take it easy (well, after this of course.)

How are you this chilly Sunday morning? We’ve brought in some extra heaters to make the place nice and cozy, so grab your coffee and sit a spell while Gordie gives you the daily details on some of the people and events from Canadian history, sports and music related to this date.

We start out on this day in 1813, near Frenchtown, Michigan, where Major General Henry Proctor leads 500 soldiers and militia, with Tecumseh’s 800 Indians from Amherstburg, in a counterattack across the frozen Detroit River after his defeat 4 days earlier. He recaptures the River Raison post, defeating the roughly 900 US troops who were led by Brig. Gen. James Winchester. Proctor managed to capture an estimated 300 American prisoners, including James Winchester.

On this day in 1874, Canada holds its second general election and Liberal leader Alexander Mackenzie defeats John A. Macdonald 138 seats to 67. The election was notable for the fact Macdonald’s party was apparently held accountable for his part in the Pacific Scandal.

The election also feature the first appearance of Wilfrid Laurier as the representative for Drummond and Louis Riel, who was elected as the member for Provencher in Manitoba (due to a warrant for his arrest in Ontario, Riel was unable to go to Ottawa to take his seat.)

On this day in 1901, after some 64 years on the throne as ruler of the English Empire, Queen Victoria dies in London at the age of 81. Her son Albert takes the throne as King Edward VII.

On this day in 1992, Roberta Bondar, a Canadian Space Agency Mission Specialist born in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, blasts into Space from the Kennedy Space Center on an eight-day flight aboard the shuttle Discovery with six other astronauts„ becoming Canada’s first lady in space.

From the world of sports, it was on this day in 1807, Canada’s first curling club was founded in Montreal.

On this day in 1981, New York Islander rookie Mike Bossy ties Rockets Richards record of 50 goals in 50 games.

Some notable Canadians born on this day include a HHoF member since 1986, Serge Savard; a linemate of the Rocket and a member of the HHoF since 1966, Elmer Lach; a defensive stand out through a Hab dynasty in the seventies J.C. Trembley;  a star of the hemp hut for the Habs in the 1940s and a member of the HHoF since 1964, Bill Durnan and the afore-mentioned Mike Bossy also a member of the HHoF (since 1991)

Today’s Juno Moldy Oldy was inspired by Ben Mink who has worked with a number of award-winning Canadian acts including k.d. lang and F.M.. Here’s Phasors On Stun.

Born on this day in 1960 the late Michael Hutchence of INXS (who was replaced by Canadian J.D. Fortune.) When was the last time you heard New Sensation?

Our musical title today, You Send Me; was inspired by the late great Mr Sam Cooke who was born on this day in 1931.

And that brings me to the conclusion of another of our daily lists so I bid you all a Good Day and send you back to my big brother Puck.

Before we go we the boys insist I mention some other people born on this day, in particular the poet Lord Byron, whose full name is Lord george Gordon Noel Byron (small things.)

And when it comes to today’s title we could add that Bill Bixby who was born on this day would be sent into fits of rage that turned him into the Incredible Hulk for a while and Linda Blair (also born today) who was sent into her own series of fits in The Exorcist.

We hope you get to enjoy the day today and we remind you to take the time to be safe along the way so we can see you right here again tomorrow.

Bye for now.

Honest you do, honest you do…

About puckdat

We are the Cornforsale Brothers, or are we? PuckDat and his three brothers Gord, Gordie and Gordon are all fictional characters who dig Canada, music, sports and history and every day they put togeher some of the things Canada's should know about their country. And because they dwell in the Hamilton Area, they have a slight bias towards the stories they seek; always trying to add the local angle. Strange, funny, informative and a bit off-the-wall, this innovative approach to teaching Canadian history has plenty of interactive links to keep you busy.
